Introduction of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho

 

The philosophy of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho is to have pride in the five virtues; Humanity, Justice, propriety, wisdom and faith, and to cultivate the spirit of simplicity and fortitude, and to foster a kind of spirit that can contribute, as a Japanese, to the international community.

 

Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho was initiated about a 500 years ago.  It is a synthesized martial art, composed of arts such as the art of Japanese sword, Iai, Jujitsu, the art of the spear and the art of Nagamaki. The training begins with the study of techniques, but the spiritual development as a human-being is the greatest goal. Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho enhances the spiritual growth as a human-being by studying the martial arts comprehensively, beginning with the study of the philosophy of the art of Japanese sword, and Jujitsu; which has an element of self defense.

 

In the latter part of the long history of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho of about 500 years,

the art was passed on only to one disciple in each generation.

The reason for this is greatly tied in with the change in society.

 

During that time, Kaiso Setoguchi-Bizennokami-Masamoto, the founder who created the name and art of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho requested land to settle in to the Kyusyu Satsuma, the only place who could match the power of Toyotomi Hideyoshi

The art of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho was very complete, even among the martial arts of that time, so in Satsuma, Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho hid all its arts and theories of tactics as a secret weapon. It can be speculated that Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho skill to subvert the enemy with just one blow, immediately after drawing the sword, which goes against the theory that one fights after the sword is drawn, must have been miraculous. The speed of 0.5 seconds to make the blow seems beyond human, and still overwhelms the people of today.

Master Genshin Ueno, The 27th soke of the generation left Kyusyu Satsuma for the first time in 500 years in 1946, and opened Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho to the world. He trained many students until he passed away in 1972.  28th soke Kagenori Ueno, the instructor, who are lineal heirs of Tenshinshou-Jigenryu, have held the sword since they were 3 years old, and are still continuing their training.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Features of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho

The major characteristic of the system is Ichinotachi-no-Gokui, the secret of the first blow, which is in the Tenchiichi-No-Tachi, the secret sword of the heaven and the earth. Its unique form, Jigenryu-Tombo-No-Kamae, takes a posture in the following way. Above your centerline, raise the sword highly over your head pointing the tip of the sword towards the sky. Ichinotachi, the first blow is performed from the Tombo-No-Kamae, the form of dragonfly. Using gravitation, weight transfer, and precise techniques that are only transferred through oral instruction, Ichinotachi, the first blow will show tremendous power.

The logic of sword art is simple and at the same time its depth is immeasurable. That is why Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho regards the innermost secret of the first blow as the very basic and sets its goal on mastering this secret. And to master this secret of Ichinotachi, Tachikiuchi-tanren has had been practiced, a practice in which one hits a tree with a wooden sword countless times. This practice has been said, from the olden times as “3000 times of hitting practice in the morning, 5000 in the evening”.

 

 

As the saying goes: “The secret of the sword art is in the sheath”, from ancient times every Japanese Kenjutsu (sword art) school came up with various ideas on how to draw a sword without letting the enemy knows. The art of Iai-Jutsu gave birth from such conception “fast drawing” and developed it to a technique “defeating an enemy at the same time you draw the sword”. This technique has been handed down to various schools of the present “Iai-do”.

 

 

Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho in its history of the system, is one of the schools in which the emphasis throughout is put on the acquisition of this movement of “Nuki, drawing a sword”. Therefore in our system, we also refer to Iai-Jutsu as “Nuki, drawing a sword”“Nuki” is put a special emphasis same as that of the secret of Ichi-No-Tachi. The strictness in the training of “drawing and sheathing a sword” in the past is beyond imagination. "Ban-Noh-Touba", Satsuma-Hayato's sayings, who were the old samurais of Satsuma region, is said to have performed ten thousand times of training every day. And only after three years of such hard training were they initiated one kata, a form from the master for the first time.

 

 

 

 

 

 

classAs for the logic of the sword art, one must put the saying “One needs one thousand days of practice to be able to perform one simple form but needs ten thousand days to understand its logic” into action in order to acquire the truth of the sword art. The logic of the sword art has its soul in Ichinotachi. A sword art system in which one cannot cut an object at the first blow of the sword, or at the time of “Nuki”, is useless in actual fighting.

 

Slow skills are useless. The light speed action of drawing a sword to catch the opponent off his guard is to be done in less than a second. The speed should target one twenty-fifth of a second. Such ultimate technique to defeat any defense is for the first time truly called the logic of the sword art.

In Jigenryu training is not unreasonable or brute force. This is because we believe that the purpose of our martial arts training is to bring out our hidden abilities. The following three are the guidelines of Jigenryu practice.

 

          1,Seek a reasonable and natural state of your mind and body.

              

          2,Follow the teaching of your masters and senior disciples obediently.

           

          3,Contrive and explore by yourself and keep training.

              

We welcome people who live outside Japan come to practice. Of course,

foreigners residing in Japan are also welcome.

 

 

 

Membership Agreement of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho

1. Do not incorporate Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho techniques into other schools of Budo.

  

2. Do not modify or redefine components of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho with personal opinion or

selfish ideas.

  

3. Do not disclose information about Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho history, Houkei, etc. without        authorization unless it is information that Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho has publicly announced or shared.

  

4. Do not criticize or slander other members of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho or other schools of Budo.

  

5. Do not practice Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho techniques with non-members of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho unless it is in a Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho public seminar.

  

6. Do not show or demonstrate Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho techniques without permission.

7. Do not use Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho techniques recklessly.

  

8. Be honest in daily life.

  

9. Authorization to transmit the teachings or techniques of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho remains solely at the discretion of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho.committee of the highest authority If a member withdraws or ceases to be a member of Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho, said person is no longer permitted to use, represent, transmit or convey any of the  Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyoho Koryu schools’ techniques or teachings.
